Creative Writing Group Hemel Hempstead
Meeting format

A typical meeting looks something like this:

  • Share our homework from the previous month and get feedback.

  • Work on one or two short creative writing exercises (which is why pen and paper is a good idea!).

  • Agree the longer exercise to work on for the next month (the homework).

  • Share any news, gossip, information about relevant events and competitions, etc.

We keep things very informal and relaxed. The leader normally researches and supplies the various exercises but anyone is welcome to contribute ideas. If there’s a particular area you’d like help with or want to practise (such as character development, narrative voice or setting) then we can find exercises or you can supply them yourself. You could also lead the next meeting. If you want to see some of the exercises we’ve worked on in the past take a look here.

Giving and Receiving Feedback
We believe that no-one can progress or develop as a writer without constructive feedback on their work. We welcome criticism of our writing so long as it’s supportive, constructive and encouraging. Equally, we will praise good writing with no thought to sparing the writer’s blushes! Our members say that’s what makes us so great – the fact that we can be open and honest with each other while at the same time cheering each other on in our efforts.
